Hobart is a city steeped in colonial heritage with many Georgian buildings constructed of convict hewn sandstone lining the streets. The city lies between the majestic Mt Wellington and the river Derwent. Visitors return over and over for the scenery, atmosphere, clean air, wonderful food and wine and the creativity of our local artisans.
Hobart was settled in 1803 and is Australia’s second oldest capital city. Our Theatre Royal is Australia’s oldest operating theatre. In the early days we were known as quite a rowdy city particularly when as well as being a busy commercial port we were a base for the British Navy in the early to mid nineteenth century. Today we are a much tamer city.
Our area was named New Town to distinguish this settlement area from Old Hobart Town. New Town Bay – now known as Cornelian Bay was an important place of shelter and fresh water for shipping. In 1834 Captain Charles Swanston was granted title to 157 acres including the land on which Graham Court now stands. Swanston Street (our back access street) was named after him – although our top end of Swanston St. was commonly known by locals as Nanny Goat Hill.
New Town boasts many beautiful heritage listed homes dating back to Hobart’s early settlement. The highly regarded and National Trust owned Runnymede is only a 5 minute walk away and well worth a visit while you are here.
